If you are experiencing difficulty breathing find out what could be to blame.
We don’t often think about our body’s functions like respiration or heart rate until there is an issue. If you’ve been noticing problems breathing it can be a bit unnerving at first. Breathing issues are often chronic, so it’s important to be able to pinpoint the problem so you can treat it effectively. From the office of your Washington DC otolaryngologist Dr. William R. Bond, here are some of the most common breathing problem causes.
Allergies
More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies and an additional 17 million have been diagnosed with asthma. Many times those who have asthma also have allergies, and vice versa. If you don’t treat these problems they can cause some serious unpleasantries for you and your breathing. Your Washington DC ENT doctor can diagnose these conditions through certain allergy and breathing tests.
Sinusitis
While this inflammatory infection that affects the sinuses is usually acute, there are certainly instances where people develop chronic cases (lasting 12 weeks or longer). This is usually because the inflammation has caused a blockage in the sinuses, which prevents drainage. When this happens the first course of action is to take antibiotics. If medication doesn’t clear the infection up then we will need to consider other procedures to relieve the pressure and facilitate sinus drainage.
Lung Disease
Besides asthma, there are certain kinds of lung diseases that can also affect your breathing including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, emphysema and even lung cancer. Because there are a slew of medical issues that could be to blame, it’s important that you come into our office for diagnosis and treatment.
Deviated Septum
A septum is a thin wall of bone and cartilage that separates the two nasal passages. A deviated septum means that this wall is crooked or bent. If severe enough, a deviated septum can actually prevent airflow through the nose. While those with more minor symptoms can find some relief from medication, usually your Washington DC otolaryngologist will recommend surgery to repair the septum.
If you are having problems breathing then it’s high time you turned to your DC ENT doctor for answers. We are here to help you breathe easier. Schedule an appointment with us today!
