Sinus infections are particularly common. In fact, they affect 31 million people every year, according to the Allergy & Asthma Network. Fortunately, your Washington, DC, ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor, Dr. William Bond, can offer treatments that relieve congestion and other sinus infection symptoms.
How can I tell if I have a sinus infection?
Sinus infections often develop after you've had a cold or another upper respiratory infection. Allergies, nasal polyps or a deviated septum can increase your risk of sinus infections. If it's been a few weeks since you got sick, and you're still experiencing nasal congestion, post-nasal drip or a runny nose, an infection may be to blame. Coughing, fatigue, and thick green or yellow nasal discharge often accompany sinus infections.
Infections can cause pain and pressure in your forehead and cheeks, and around your eyes. When you bend over or lower your head, you may notice that the pressure and pain tend to worsen. You may also experience frequent headaches and pain or pressure in your ears. After a while, the muscles in your neck and at the back of your head might become tight and painful.
Have your upper teeth recently started to hurt? Inflammation in your sinus passages can irritate tooth nerves, triggering pain that feels very much like a toothache.
What can I do to ease my symptoms?
Over-the-counter decongestants and pain relievers can be helpful if you have a sinus infection. Drinking plenty of water keeps your sinuses moist, while warm compresses placed over your face can reduce pressure. Nasal irrigation, whether you use saline spray or a Neti pot, can thin mucus and ease sinus pressure. (Distilled water or cooled boiled water should be used in the Neti pot, not tap water.)
If you're still suffering after trying home treatment, it's time to call the Washington ENT office. Your ENT may recommend one or more treatments to ease your painful symptoms. If you have a bacterial infection, you'll need an antibiotic to kill the bacteria. Oral decongestants and nasal spray decrease congestion, allowing you to breathe easier. Your ENT may also recommend corticosteroids, a medication that reduces swelling and inflammation in your sinuses. If your allergies trigger sinus infections, you may benefit by taking an antihistamine that helps control your symptoms.
Sinus surgery may be needed if you continue to have infections or if you have frequent infections due to polyps, an obstruction or a deviated septum.
